Even after abuse stops, you might still be affected by it. Because abuse causes trauma, an abuse survivor may experience flashbacks about the abuse, recurrent nightmares, panic attacks, anxiety and depression, which will all have an impact on the quality of life. Although it might seem easier to avoid thinking about the abuse altogether, this is not a helpful strategy in the long-term and it is only once you have dealt with the consequences of abuse that you can break free from it and start living a more fulfilled life.
