Aims of counselling
I often hear my clients say that it has been hard for them to make a decision to start seeing a counsellor, because of their belief that counselling is for people with big problems or for people in real need of help. The fact is that counselling and psychotherapy could be of benefit to most people and there is no problem too small. In counselling and psychotherapy, a sound and trusting relationship between the client and the therapist is established, which in itself can be a helpful step towards resolving your issues.
The main aim of counselling is for us to focus specifically on the issues that you would like to resolve. The best way to do this is to establish some concrete goals at the beginning of the therapy and some goal posts, which would help to measure the result achieved along the way.
Instead of focusing on one therapeutic approach, I employ various tools and techniques to help you achieve your goals, resolve your issues or simply feel better about yourself.
Is counselling completely confidential?
Yes, the counselling sessions are private and confidential and the information that you disclose in the session will not be shared with anyone. If a situation should arise when I feel concerned for your physical safety or for the safety of another person that you mentioned in the session, then I may need to talk to a professional colleague about my concerns in order to make sure that everyone is safe.
Apart from that, it is up to you to decide whether you tell anyone else about your counselling sessions or not.
